Fresh from the Mind of McPhitty

I’m Google-able!

I’m 3 of the top 10 hits when searching for “James F. West” on Google!  By Web 2.0 standards, that means I’m somebody.  I just wanted to celebrate.  BTW, all of the other top 10 “matches” are completely bogus (e.g Baird, James F. - West Brookfield, MA).  So the only three that actually match the search are all me.  That’s so cool.

I’m finally Google-able!

I’m #2 on Google!  This is cause for a celebration!  See the proof below:

Google search results for James F. West 8/1/09

Even better, the first hit is bogus (click the picture above and look closely).  So there you go, I am finally in the top 10, and I’m the first legitimate match.  Woo hoo!!!

Finally, a sensible holiday

Happy Sysadmin Day!  It’s time to show your appreciation for all those dedicated, hard-working, under-appreciated sysadmins, like myself.  Check out http://www.sysadminday.com/

Microsoft bingTM

Microsoft is pushing bing, so what is bing? Microsoft’s Google clone. Supposedly it’s the newest, coolest search site, at least that what Microsoft wants us to think. The reality is it screams “See, we’re just like Google, so use us instead of them”. Seriously, the links at the top of the page are exactly the same ones that Google has had for years.  Now, that doesn’t necessarily mean that Google is better, but it is funny.  There is one cool feature in bing’s video search, though. When you hover over the videos, they autoplay.  I also like the fact that bing searches a number of video sites.  Anyway on the similarities, judge for yourself:

I found a new Sci-Fi website

I just ran across Republibot.com today.  I haven’t decided whether I like it or not, but I do like their tag line: “The Science Fiction Site for people who aren’t Drooling Kneejerk Liberals”.  That alone deserves major props.  The jury’s still out on the rest of the site.

Postsingular

Postsingular Cover

I just finished reading the novel Postsingular by Rudy Rucker.  Incredible!  It is a mindbending cyber-headtrip.  I’m still processing it, but I have to say, it was a great read.  The writing is sensual, visceral, and worldly, and while the worldview of the novel is significantly different from my own, I truly enjoyed the experience of reading it, and find much in it that is worth further consideration.  I’ll probably write more as it comes to me.  Oh, by the way, it’s available here (http://www.rudyrucker.com/postsingular/#postsingulardownload) under the Creative Comons License.
